As part of my project, I looked at the landscape of existing social and emotional support models out there for abortion patients. I looked at four different types of support: 1:1 talklines/text lines, group support models, fora for asking questions and sharing experiences, and storytelling platforms that help to fight stigma and build community. Here are just a few examples of some of the great organizations doing work in this space:
1:1 talklines/textlines
The All Options Talkline provides non-judgmental, comprehensive options counseling to pregnant people
All Options also runs the Faith Aloud talkline, which provides spiritual cousneling and emotional support on options and abortion experiences
Exhale provides post-abortion emotional support for patients, partners, and allies via a textline staffed by volunteer counselors
Connect & Breathe provides post-abortion emotional support via its talkline
Storytelling platforms
Abortion Out Loud works to end stigma and strengthen support for abortion access, particularly for young people, and includes submissions of stories, videos, and photos from people who have had abortions
Shout Your Abortion seeks to normalize abortion and create space for conversation about it, with written stories, art, and videos from people who have had abortions
2+ abortions seeks to bust stigma around having more than one abortion, via story sharing and support
